DRAGON UPDATE

January 31, 2012

Dear Parents,

It has been a fabulous month of no interruptions – i.e. snow days J- just steady learning. We are well into the third quarter, and the pace and expectations are picking up. Every class is deep into new objectives and concepts. Please keep abreast of your child(ren)’s progress in academics and also encourage them to continue to apply their very best effort every day. It is very easy for a child to fall behind when new concepts are being introduced daily. Please don’t hesitate to call if concerns arise. We want to ensure that each student is working to their potential and this can only happen if there is constant communication between home and school.

Don’t forget to check your child’s grades online if they are in grades 3-8. You will find their grades at www.rvs.gradebook.com. There is a link on the school’s website. Also your child can be enhancing his/her skills by using the website www.myskillstutor.com. It, too, is linked to our website.

Cold and Flu Season

Just a reminder it is very important that if your child is complaining of a headache, stomachache or sore throat, that you check their temperature.  Please make arrangements to keep him/her home if they have even a slight temperature. The flu can be spread up to 5 days after the child’s temperature is gone. Be considerate and keep your child home a FULL 24 hours after their temperature has returned to normal. Although this will not prevent everyone from getting the flu, it will help with managing it.

If your child is absent from school, call the school, then send a note the day the student returns explaining the absence. In regard to homework, it is your child’s responsibility to turn in the assignments. The number of days missed are the number of days the child has to make up the assignments. A homework assignment sheet is sent home with the books/worksheet(s).  If this sheet is lost, grades 3 thru 8 can check online for missing assignments. Please make sure your student turns in his/her assignments in a timely manner after being sick

Thank you for your cooperation in both of these matters.

10/$10 Tickets

Any family who sold one complete book of tickets or donated $75 may participate in an O.O.U. day on February 17th. Those families who sold more than one book will have their name put in a drawing to win $50.00 in SCRIP!

The participation was down a little bit from 75% last year to 72%. Nice effort from everyone who participated. It is very important that every family participates in the Home and School fund-raisers because it is through this organization’s efforts that the School Board can keep the school registration/book fees down.

Please, if your family has not participated in this fund-raiser, consider sending your tickets or donation to the office. The Home and School Organization raised $8,540 from your efforts with a profit of $4,940.  (This includes the two families who donated $75 rather than selling tickets).

Kindergarten & Pre-Kindergarten Screening Sign-up

It’s that time of year to begin preparing for our future kindergarteners and pre-kindergarteners. We will again be administering the screenings here at St. George.  By doing our own screening, we get a personal feel for the incoming class. It also allows us to better assess your child’s potential, strengths, and personality.

Our screening dates will be March 20th, 21st, and 22nd.  If your child is currently enrolled in our pre-kindergarten program, we will set a time to screen him/her on one of these dates and then set a time to conference with you to go through the results.

If you have an incoming pre-kindergartener or kindergartener, you will need to call the school office 486-5914 to set up an appointment to have your child screened. Your child should turn four years old by December 31, 2012.

Lost and Found

If your child has lost a hat, glove, sweatshirt, etc. please have them check the Lost and Found box. We have collected a lot of items and we would really like to give all of these things back to their owners.

Winter Games

This year’s annual event was a BIGGER success than in years past!!! A good time was had by many in attendance. To the Committee:  your work on planning, organizing and revamping the event was the catalyst that helped assure its success. All night long and even into this week I heard positive comments about the food, the gaming and the overall atmosphere.

Also thank you to those parents who bought a ticket, sold a ticket, sold several tickets, especially Kevin Stiers who gets the outstanding seller award again this year, and those who juggled basketball schedules, wedding showers, babysitters or whatever else to support the event. You are the parents who go above and beyond “the comfortable” to make St. George School GREAT! Our children will have a safer environment because of your commitment to make our school the best.

The Winter Games made a profit of $14,120.26 and The Swing Dance, Dinner and Auction made $27,283.50.  The profit from these two fund-raisers will help build a passage between the Primary Building and the Intermediate Building. This will allow us to keep the front door locked and keep better track of parents and visitors in and out of our building. The passage way also helps us to become a fully accredited school.

Your Trash is our Cash:

We are still collecting printer cartridges, Best Choice, Campbell ’s UPC’s, Box Tops and aluminum cans.  Believe it or not, our school raises between $1500 and $2,000 a year on the trash you throw away. So please consider the school before you dump any of the above mentioned items in the trash bin. We also need obsolete paper.

If you bring aluminum cans to school please place them in the brown trailer parked in the gravel parking lot. Used printer cartridges, Best Choice and Campbell’s UPCs and Box Tops for Education can be turned in to the school office.  Thanks for your cooperation.

CONGRATULATIONS

The fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade held their annual Geography Bee January 12th. After a well-fought competition, Liam Korostynski took first place and Hannah Bader was awarded second place. Congratulations to all twenty contestants who took part in the event.
